Steering Group Team
Chris Cousens, Chair.
Chris has chaired WSW since 2020. During his tenure WSW has secured governmental support and funding and published its 2020-2026 Strategy. Chris is the RNLI’s Regional Water Safety Lead for Wales and has worked in drowning prevention since 2015.
Fergus Feeney, Steering Group Member
Fergus is the Group CEO of Swim Wales, working to ensure aquatics for everyone for life and is the Vice Chair of the Welsh Sports Association.
Richard Wasson, Steering Group Member
Richard is the Community Safety Lead for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Paul Kay, Steering Group Member
Paul is the Head of Fire Safety at North Wales Fire Rescue Service.
Carlene McAvoy, Steering Group Member
Carlene McAvoy is RoSPA’s Senior Policy Manager and works across the UK in drowning prevention and water safety. Carlene is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and is also the Founder of Water Safety Scotland. She sits on the Steering Group of Water Safety Scotland, Water Safety Wales, Water Safety England and the National Water Safety Forum.
Peter Gallagher, Secretariat
Peter is a Water Safety Development Manager with RoSPA and joined Water Safety Wales in June 2024. Working full-time to coordinate the groups efforts and provide support to all of WSW’s subgroups and lead on a number of projects to further drowning prevention efforts in Wales.
