More people across Wales are enjoying stand up paddleboarding people. Before you hit the water make sure you know how to keep yourself safe.

  • Get the Skills: Start with a club, course or instructor.
  • Identify your craft: Label your craft with your name, contact number and/or car registration.
  • Wear a personal floatation device/buoyancy aid: Always ensure it is properly fitted and purchased from a reputable brand/retailer.
  • Wear a Leash: Use an appropriate leash whilst paddleboarding. For more information check here.
  • Dress for the conditions: Wear appropriate clothing for the conditions and water temperature.
  • Let someone know before you go: Tell them where you are going, you departure point and your intended return time.
  • Know your limits: Consider your craft, the conditions, your experience and fitness level. Save strength for the return journey.
  • Check the weather: Download a weather app and be aware of weather warnings, wind speed and direction, sea state and tide times.

Ensure you have a means of communication: Have a reliable means of communication, such as a mobile phone in a waterproof bag or a VHF radio, and keep it on your person.
