Spending time by rivers, lakes or the coast is a great way to unwind however slips, trips and falls can cause people to enter the water unexpectedly, increasing their risk of drowning. More people drown after accidentally falling into water than during any planned activity.

General

  • Always let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back
  • Check the weather forecast before you head out
  • Take extra care in windy and stormy weather
  • Always carry a charged mobile phone
  • Take note of warning signs and keep away from the edge
  • If you are in trouble in the water - Float To Live
  • If you see someone else in the water – Call 999, Tell them to float on their back, Throw them something that floats
  • Supervise children near water

Coastal

  • Make sure you don’t get cut-off by the tide, check tide times for your location
  • No Lifeguards are on duty over the winter months. Take safety advice from signage or seek local advice on tides and other hazards
